Domestic Violence Awareness month?
In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed, that same year the first national toll-free hotline was begun. In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress. Such legislation has passed every year since with NCADV providing key leadership in this effort.
Remember, while each October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, domestic violence is not confined by calenders. Last year alone, there were nearly 5 million reported cases of domestic violence in this country. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please wear a purple ribbon, tie one on your car antennas, and encourage your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to participate in this awareness campaign by doing the same.
Each October, national domestic violence organizations and their allies sponsor Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) activities to raise awareness about domestic abuse at the national level. Government agencies, corporate and business leaders, professional associations, law enforcement agencies, hospitals and others take part in national DVAM activities. The activities include campaigns encouraging domestic violence awareness in health care settings, charity shopping days and national days of recognition.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month ( DVAM ) is a time for collective action, a time for communities unite to mourn those who have died as a result of abuse, celebrate those who have survived, connect those who work to end violence, and raise public awareness about domestic violence
